Notes:

Caro mio ben (‘My dear beloved’) is a song that was long attributed to Giuseppe Giordani, Tommaso’s brother. This aria was written for a London concert, and is not from an opera. Interest in Italian opera had flourished in the English capital throughout virtually all the 1700’s. A possible publication date for this aria is 1782, in London, by Preston publishing.

Tommaso Giordani, born in 1730, was trained in Naples, and moved to London with his family around 1752. In 1764 Giordani moved to Dublin, Ireland. He returned to London in 1781 for a short two years, then returned to Dublin for the rest of his life (he lived until 1806). He published many vocal and instrumental works during his lifetime.

David Johnstone has prepared this song from an easy choral arrangement, and only the first four positions used in the first cello part (the second has just one note outside first position, and the third voice none). It can work equally well with three solo cellists or with a much larger cello ensemble.
