GRANADOS – Danza Española (Rondalla Aragonesa), Op.37 / 6 – for CELLO AND PIANO
Prepared for Cello and Piano by DAVID JOHNSTONE

Notes:
The “Aragonese Rondalla” is the Spanish Dance number 6, originally for piano solo, of the Opus 37 collection of Enric Granados. This large set of 12 pieces were composed between 1892 and 1900. Once finished, they achieved rapid fame and were also seen as nationalistic influences for European composers as varied as Massenet (France), Grieg (Norway) and César Cui (Russia).
The sixth piece is marked ‘Allegretto, poco a poco scherzando’ and the gradual rise of tempo and intensity is often difficult for pianists to fully capture, especially with the ‘brilliance’ of the final part.
The central part is rather in the form of a Spanish ‘copla’, full of creative and sensual possibilities for the performer, in this case the cellist.
After this, the first section is repeated, and a bright and firm coda brings the piece to a close.
The version for cello is highly effective and readily playable for medium level and advanced cello – being set in D Major the thumb (Q) is usually placed on the octave harmonic notes (though David Johnstone always suggests a firm contact never-the-less!).
