Notes:
Little is known of the ‘Chansonette’ of Noel Johnson, except that it was first published in about 1915 for cello – piano duo (he passed away the following year). It is a beautiful small concert piece – a romantic salon piece – with an important role for the L.H. of the pianist; with only a few readjustments this is effectively transcribed for double bass soloist, which while not having the principal melody (the cello soloist has this) is by far and away the second most important line. It is most convincing when performed by the orchestra’s upper strings in three sections (the normal sections of violin I, violin II & viola), but this role can be fulfilled by three chamber music players, thus making a concert quintet with most importance on the cello and double bass.
William Noel Johnson was born in Repton, Derby, England, on 22nd May, 1863. He was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and studied cello at the Royal Academy of Music under William E. Whitehouse, and in Leipzig with Schröder and Klengel. He returned to London as performer and composer. His compositions include works for cello and piano, songs, and part-songs. The cello pieces include:
Caprice // Nocturne // Serenade // Idylle // Reverie
Amongst his songs, “Sheila”, with Irish influences, and the vigorous number “All the bloom of the year”, were formerly well recommended. He also composed music for several plays. His works won numerous awards and were well received in performances.
In 1902, Noel married Rosina (Rosie) Johnson, twenty years his junior and not related in spite of the shared surname, with four children being born in London, and two more after moving to the seaside – six children in just eleven years. However, the family’s idyllic seaside life was shattered in January 1916 when William Noel Johnson, now living near Southend, died suddenly of pneumonia. He had composed his last song ‘Rosemary’ just a few days before passing away; this song had orchestral accompaniment.
Definitely a composer who should be investigated further….
