Notes

The Music of the Night” or simply “Music of the Night” is a song from the popular 1986 musical The Phantom of the Opera. The music was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Charles Hart. It has appeared in multiple soundtracks of musicals, such as the original supporting version of the English actor Michael Crawford, and has been performed by great renowned artists such as Barbra Streisand, Sarah Brightman or by Il Divo.

Initially made famous by Michael Crawford, the actor who originated the Phantom’s show both in the West End and on Broadway, the popular song has sold millions of copies worldwide and has been translated into many different languages. I regular ‘depped’ in this show whilst it was in the ‘West End’ of London!

Due to very noticeable similarities between the song and a recurring melody in Giacomo Puccini 1910 opera, ‘La fanciulla del Oeste’ (‘The Girl of the Golden West’), Webber has been accused of plagiarism by various individuals. Following the success of Phantom, the Puccini owners filed against Webber, accusing him of plagiarism, but the suit was settled out of court and the details were not released to the public.

The four cello and piano adaption is based on an existing arrangement for choir and piano, but with numerous changes to make this far more ‘cellistic’. Even so, it is difficult for the higher voices (Cellos 1 & 2) and these should be attempted by advanced standard players – but all is perfectly playable!
