Brief Personal Notes:

Many of you will probably associate the name ‘Johnstone’ (aargh!) with transcriptions and arrangements, but in fact I do have quite a lot of original pieces to my name. As a student I was in the enviable situation – at least as I see it – of being on the Performers’ Course, but being able to attend some of the more academic subjects too without the burdens of having to sit those exams! Norman Fulton, Scottish composer, oversaw much of my counterpoint, fugue writing, orchestration etc.

Anyway, this piece is dedicated to LYDIA EMILY DOBSON; such a good example of a delightful person and a really competent cellist. This piece is dedicated to her (not forgetting her mom Elly, nor the pet cat ‘Pickles’!) and is for an ensemble of four solo cellists. It’s quite difficult to describe – it’s tonal but not always plainly romantic, holding a film ambiance, even perhaps far distant associations with the ‘Cortege’ of Theodore Holland. It’s available here so you can judge for yourselves!
