Brief Information:

These were originally composed as horn duos! Mozart probably composed the music  for the virtuoso hornist Joseph Leutgeb (1732-1811), whom Mozart knew in Salzburg. Leutgeb had been, in fact, the inspiration for Mozart’s horn concertos, and was a friend of the Mozart family in Salzburg before moving to Vienna. After Mozart relocated to Vienna in 1781, he renewed his friendship with Leutgeb.

Mozart completed the duos on 27th July, 1786; “untern Kegelscheiben” (‘while playing nine-pins’). Legend has it that Mozart also composed the Clarinet Trio in the same way, but that cannot be substantiated as it can in these duos!. Leutgeb’s technique must have been impressive, judging by the first part! However, this is real chamber music and in this presentation for clarinet and cello both parts have most rewarding lines.

The movements are cast as ‘miniatures’ and are titled:

  1. Allegro
  2. Menuett
  3. Andante
  4. Polonaise
  5. Larghetto
  6. Menuetto e Trio
  7. Adagio
  8. Allegro
  9. Menuetto e Trio
  10. Allegro
  11. Andante
  12. Allegro

Total duration: almost 15 minutes

Difficulty: MEDIUM
