Brief Information:

No.1 of ‘Deux Melodies Hebraïques’

This music by Maurice Ravel is of the most beautiful Jewish music ever. Kaddish is the first of two songs which form his cycle named Deux Mélodies Hébraïques and is proof that Ravel was well acquainted with this style of music. They were first performed in June 1914 by Alvina Alvi (who commissioned them) with Ravel himself at the piano, just a month or so before the outbreak of the first World War – is the profundity of the music in part ominously connected to what was about to unfold on the global scene? However the circumstances, Ravel then orchestrated the songs within a couple of years after the end of the Great War. The original piano accompaniment is simple yet effective, often repeatedly stroking chords of a harmonic nature to create a climate of sublime clouds upon which the melody is free to express itself; Johnstone treats the cello ensemble in the same fashion, though by lowering the tonality some deeper gravitational weight is added to the eighth cello part, playing with a C string scordatura set to Bb. Along with the Shema and Amidah, the Kaddish is one of the most important and central prayers in the Jewish liturgy. Dr. Tarsi gives the following approximate translation of the text of the Kaddish as used by Ravel:

Magnified and sanctified be the name of God throughout the world which He has created according to His will.

May He establish His kingdom during the days of our life and the life of all speedily and soon and let us say Amen.

(Here normally comes a congregational response, which is missing from Ravel’s setting).

Exalted and glorified, lauded and praised, acclaimed and honored be the name of the Holy One blessed be He, praised beyond all blessings and hymns, beyond all tributes that mortals can express and let us say Amen.

Enjoy the music in the version for multi-cellos! The wonderful British cellist MATTHEW SHARP has recorded a solo disc of devotional works from across denominations and the world for multi-tracked cello and voice entitled “Rough Magic” for Edition Peters Sounds. The programme includes this setting of Ravel’s Kaddish for voice and seven cellos.

..

The music also exists in anther Johnstone setting, for soloist (cello, violin or clarinet) and STRING ORCHESTRA. Furthermore, this alternative version has been heard:

** in the concert ‘In Memorian 2015’ in memory of the Holocaust victims and the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, in Caracas, Venezuela by the Orquesta Sinfónica de Venezuela (and apparently recorded on CD).

** It was also performed by the German/Belgium soloist Judith Emert with the Wroclaw Chamber Orchestra Leopoldinum (Wroclaw, Poland)
