General difficulty of the music – other brief Information:
Tango World is a series of pieces in tango style, or with certain tango influence, prepared by David Johnstone. Some of the pieces use tango melodic cells or fragments already composed by others but uniquely adapted to cellos, whilst others are totally original inventions of David Johnstone from the outset.
These pieces have been careful scored so as to be perfectly playable by elementary cellists (and especially relevant to Grades 1 to 5 in Great Britain, or ‘Grado Elemental’ in Spain). Hopefully you will consider these pieces as worthy musical ‘compositions’ and could be performed by cellists well above those afore mentioned levels – indeed right up to professional performance levels. They are not a set or suite as such; any piece or pieces can be performed separately or individually. However, they are also effective as a ‘tango celebration’ and can be presented in their entirety. However, these pieces go in an ascending order of difficulty, and a word of warning – piece number 6 is more suitable for higher level cellists (we are here looking at a full concert work set in four movements, with more complex rhythms and musical ‘thrust’ including a tango fugue, and as such there is no ‘easy’ part!). If this piece is played by Cello Orchestra then maybe best for the “Cadenzas· section to be played by only one player each part.
Each piece might be played by three solo cellists, or by a small ensemble or by a large orchestra of cellists – Johnstone is fully convinced that any number of cellists (from 3 to 100!) could present this music in equally convincing fashion.
This musical creation was originally written for: Ricardo Alba Lago, Spanish cellist
