MEDIUM (Easy-to-medium).
The Mazurka in D minor is originally for piano, and comes from the ‘Album for the Young’ which Tchaikovsky composed in 1878 (there are 24 pieces in all in this collection, and it is noteworthy for containing really good writing for youngsters whilst never ‘looking down’ on them). This piece is cast in a loose A-B-A form, though a common rhythmic figure is found throughout. This is not surprising, for being a Mazurka the dance aspect is so important, and that translates here onto the cello by a need for a good bowing staccato and to execute the rests with a pure silence! Therefore, although not suitable for near beginners, this piece may be very useful for the cello class for those who are comfortable with the first four positions on the cello but maybe have not yet ventured into the higher positions or into thumb position. At the same time it may give joys to cellists of all abilities including professionals. Johnstone shares the melodic importance between the two cello parts almost equally, making this a good but short concert duo between two students or between the pupil and teacher – most performances are gauged a little short of a minute and a half.
This musical creation was originally written for: Luis Lorenzana
