DOUBLE BASS CONCERTO, Concerto-Rhapsody, the ‘Romantic’ (Johnstone) – for Solo Double Bass and Chamber Orchestra
The principal motivation for me was to produce a highly romantic work, which might fit well alongside Koussevitsky and Bottesini … and just a few others. Some people might disagree, but I feel that there are simply not enough big romantic works for double bass and orchestra. So here you might recognize some Rachmaninov and Glazunov influences although nothing has been copied; this is all my own work.

Here are further details:
** Dedicated to my friend JUAN CANAL
** inspired by the wonderful double bass playing of PIOTR PIOTROWSKY (see the photo below), hoping that I will be able to programme the work with him as soloist, although there are no restrictions to performances or recordings anywhere….
** Duration: approx. 26 to 28 minutes
** The double bass part is written in Soloist tuning (A, E, B, F#)
** Bar numbers are only shown in the general score – all others (including score) have ample rehearsal letters of reference.
** Scoring: Double bass soloist, violins I, violins II, violas, cellos, double basses, 1 flute, 1 oboe, 1 clarinet (both Bb and A), 1 bassoon, and 1 french horn.
** Sensible MINIMUM orchestral size of the string sections: 7 Violin I, 6 Violin II, 4 Viola, 4 cello and 2 double bass. But if more players are available in an orchestra they should be included!
** Structure: in one giant movement in Sonata form, with three different subject groups, and an extended episode appearing after the first development section serving as a slow movement, which then leads to the second development section and posterior recapitulation, rounded off by a small coda. The work is performed without a break…
