The “Song of the Volga Boatmen” is a well-known traditional Russian song collected by Mily Balakirev, and published in his book of folk songs in 1866. It was sung by burlaks, or barge-haulers, on the Volga River. Balakirev published it with only one verse (the first). The other two verses were added at a later date.  Johnstone’s version for Six Cellos – or Cello Orchestra – reverts to the harmonic simplicity of the original song; however the weight of communication is enormous. It should always be interpreted with strong feeling and significance, and a strong legato feel. One can sense the enormous arch in the music, rising to ‘ff’ before disappearing ‘out of sight’ as the music totally fades out. It works very well for cello ensembles, where the power of the cello C string in the C Minor tonality (in the bass parts) really captures many a ‘Russian performance’ – enjoy it!
